Another vote for Open Sorce
I was just talking to my Buddy Weave, who was bitching about hitting the 137 gig LBA32 drive limit in Windoze XP. I told him that I thhought it was pretty funny that my old ass Qube with NetBSD supports LBA-48 and therefore can address up to 144 PETABYTES!
So how is it that a 7 year old machine with a free OS is more advanced that the latest and greatest from the all powerful Microsoft? Gooood question. Maybe Gates just quiped “No one will ever need more than 137 gigs!” and they moved on. Anyway, now MS is going to make everyone suffer while they work on the 2006 release of Longhorn, by which time, all of the open source folks will being enjoying 500GB or 1TB drives while Windoze users are stuck at a measly l37 gigs. Tsk Tsk…
Yes there are work arounds.. but according to Weave, if you want to use an LBA48 boot drive with a new XP install it’s a serious pain in the ass if it works at all. I say it’s just another example that closed source behemoths like MS are dinosaurs compared to the firey meteoric goodness of Open Source!
